CDO barangay captains to help in NFA rice distributions

aaron neri TO THE RESCUE? As hordes of people continue to flock to Cogon Public Market and other authorized retail stores to buy rice from the National Food Authority (NFA), barangay officials here in Cagayan de Oro City and Misamis Oriental are now being tapped to help in the distribution of rice but at a limited kilo per person per week.

Also, both the Archdiocese of Cagayan de Oro and the Iglesia Filipina Independente (IFI) recently voiced their willingness to help out in the distribution of NFA rice to the people in the grassroots level should local authorities request them.

In a special report to the City Council,  Association of Barangay Chairpersons-Cagayan de Oro (ABC-CDO) and City Council ex oficio member City Councilor Aaron Neri announced that the NFA, Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and Department of Agriculture among others are now asking barangay officials to help them out.

However, it will be the barangay unit which has to come out with some capital to help in the distribution and that it can only distribute at only 14 kilos of NFA rice per person per week at the ceiling price of P18.50 per kilo.

“Those barangays which cannot afford to do any distribution as it does not have any capital can go to the DSWD and can obtain a loan of P20,000 as start-up capital,” he said during their session last Monday.

Neri said the P18.50 per kilo price of NFA rice can be raised by those barangays in the hinterland areas after due discussion and deliberation of the DSWD and DA taking in consideration the distance of the barangay from the NFA bodegas.

However, no barangay-distributor is allowed to increase the allowed profit margin of P75.00 for every P837.25 sack of NFA rice which contains around 50 kilos each.

He added that the whole barangay rice distribution program will start any time this month.

Meanwhile, Archdiocese of Cagayan de Oro vicar general Msgr. Rey Monsanto and IFI Bishop Felixberto Calang separately expressed their readiness to lend their hands to the rice distribution campaign of the government.

Both also agree that there is a need to review the government’s policies on agricultural production and food supply. (By Lizanilla J. Amarga)
