CDO law schools produced 34 new lawyers

The Supreme Court recently released the results of the grueling 2007 Bar Examination showing that the two law schools from Cagayan de Oro had just produced a total of 34 new lawyers.

Figures from the Office of the Bar Confidant headed by Deputy Clerk of Court and Bar Confidant Atty. Ma. Cristina B. Layusa showed a total of 5,626 law graduates from 109 law schools nationwide who took and finished the exams held on September 2, 9, 16, and 23, 2007 at the De La Salle University in Taft Avenue, Manila.

However, out of the 5,626 examinees there would have only been around 5 percent who passed the exams until the Supreme Court lowered the passing grade from 75 to 70 making it possible for some 1,289 or 22.91 percent to pass the 2007 Bar Examinations.

Out of this 29 of this 1,289 examinees are from the Xavier University-Ateneo de Cagayan Xavier University (XU-Law) with five from Liceo de Cagayan University-College of Law (LdCU-Law).

XU-Law records reveal that its passing percentage this year is 35.36 percent or 29 out of 82 who successfully hurdled the 2007 bar exam with 23 of the 29 or 20.68 percent being first time takers and six of them repeaters.

XU-Law Dean Raul Villanueva expressed his congratulations to the successful examinees saying the bar exams last year was described by many law school deans nationwide as “really very difficult.”

“Lisud gyud kaayo kadto nga exams ug dako gihapon akong kalipay nga daghan-daghan ang nakapasar (The examination was really very difficult and I am still very glad that there were still a number of our graduates who passed),” he said.

He added that XU-Law at least had a larger percentage of 35.36 percent as compared to the total nationwide passing percentage of only 22.91 percent.

The Supreme Court indeed reported that the 22.91 percent passage in the 2007 bar exam was the fourth lowest result in the last eight years. The other lowest percentage recorded was in 2002 where only 19.68 percent of examinees passed the bar followed in 2003 with 20.17 percent and then in 2000 with 20.84 percent.

The new lawyers from XU-Law include: Anne Lourdes R. Achas, Milber G. Alinas, Joanah C. Alinog, Odilon A. Apolinario, Noel G. Bacal, Jerefe Tubigon-Bacang, Saturnino N. Baconga, Leo Santiago M. Briones, Dick Carlo J. Cabanlas, Carlomagno N. Calingin, Bhavelyn S Calipes, Eileen Joy P. Canceko, Chester C. Castaños, Normina M. Datudacula and Peter Bill C. Elizalde.
