PGMA visits Camiguin for Central Nautical Highway RORO Caravan

May 1, 2008

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo recently arrived in Camiguin to promote the Roll-On Roll-Off System and the Strong Republic Nautical Highway (SRNH) via roll-on, roll-off (RORO).

The President joined the RORO Caravan, April 28-29, inaugurating RORO ports in Bulan, Sorsogon; Masbate City; Bogo, Cebu; Tubigon, Bohol; and Mambajao, Camiguin.

On board Super Shuttle Ferry 12 from Jagna, Bohol, the President, along with Vice President Noli de Castro and some of her Cabinet secretaries, was greeted by colorful bankas (pumpboats) adorned with bandiritas (flaglets) and streamers before docking at the Mambajao Port in Barangay Balbagon at 5:45 P.M. yesterday, April 29.

Lone district Representative Pedro P. Romualdo, Mambajao town Mayor Maria Luisa de la Fuente-Romualdo, Presidential Assistant for Northern Mindanao Pacifico Pupos, Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) East Mindanao Command chief Lt. Gen. Cardozo Luna, and Philippine National Police Region 10 Regional Director Teodorico Capuyan, together with other local executives were there to receive the President.

Shortly after her arrival, Northern Mindanao Port District Manager Bienvenido Basco of the Philippine Ports Authority briefed President Arroyo on the renovation and expansion projects at the Mambajao Port.

According to Basco, the projects, amounting to P75 million, are composed of the 25-lineal meter extension of the RORO ramp completed at a contract cost of P25.4 million; 1,260-square meter reclamation of back-up area completed at a cost of P31.7 million; and the on-going construction of the P17.7 million, 464-square meter passenger terminal, which could accommodate 150 passengers.

Once completed, amenities in the new passenger terminal include an air-conditioned passenger waiting area, VIP lounge, administration office, snack centers, and sanitary facilities.

With these facilities, the Mambajao Port can now accommodate larger and more RORO vessels plying the Balbagon-Jagna-Balbagon and Cebu-Balbagon-Cebu routes.

The SRNH is one of the President’s flagship projects that aim to link the entire country in the fastest possible way and conveniently via RORO ports.

In her 2007 State of the Nation Address (SONA), President Arroyo identified the Ports of Balbagon and Guinsiliban of Camiguin for inclusion in the Central Nautical Highway, as these ports connect the SRNH to Mindanao.

Mambajao Port is the nearest RoRo point linking the Visayas to Mindanao via the port of Jagna in Bohol, while Guinsiliban Port connects Camiguin to Balingoan, Misamis Oriental to the mainland of Mindanao.

The Benoni Port in Mahinog, also a RORO point, connects the province to Misamis Oriental via Balingoan Port.

The Central Nautical Highway of the SRNH includes Cagayan de Oro City to Balingaon, Misamis Oriental to Camiguin, Bohol to Cebu, Masbate and Camarines Sur towards Luzon.

To cap the RORO Caravan, President Arroyo will fly to Cagayan de Oro, April 30, to meet with SRNH-Central Seaboard stakeholders before leaving for Manila on the same day.

The rest of the RORO Caravaneers will catch up with the President in Cagayan de Oro via the Benoni-Balingoan RORO route and disembark on board buses. (Jorie C. Valcorza/PIA-MisOrOccCam)
