26th Press Freedom Anniversary celebration starts this week
May 13, 2008

MEDIA IN BLACK. Members of the Cagayan de Oro Press Club (COPC) will again be coming together to spearhead the 26th Anniversary of Press Freedom Week this year. Solidarity Forever Our Dreams Will Never Die. Story by By Mike Banos.
The media in Cagayan de Oro city will celebrate the 26th edition of
Press Freedom Week on May 26-31st with fellowship and camaraderie
among media personnel, their news sources and other members of civil
society.
And to celebrate a dubious distinction: so far, despite the continuing
genocide against journalists in the country, not one journalist in the
celebrated ‘City of Golden Friendship’ has been killed in the line of
duty, although COPC Member Joe Pantoja was shot last year in the
nearby city of Iligan but survived.
The festivities are coordinated by the Cagayan de Oro Press Club, Inc.
(COPC) with the theme: “Pagpangita sa Kamatuoran, Alang sa Pagsangyaw
sa Tanan” (Searching for the Truth for the purpose of sharing it with
others.).
Other media organizations which will join in the week-long celebration
include the local chapters of National Union of Journalists in the
Philippines, Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster sa Pilipinas, Diamond Press
Corps, PNP-10 Press Corps and the Regional Association of Government
Communicators (Ragcom).
They will be joined by the Cagayan de Oro media’s partners in service
including the Cagayan de Oro City Government headed by Mayor
Constantino G. Jaraula, Misamis Oriental Provincial Government led by
Governor Oscar S. Moreno, the Philippine National Police Regional
Office 10 (PRO-10) with Regional Director Teodorico Capuyan, Jr.; 4th
Infantry Division headed by its new division commander Brig. Gen.
Ricardo A. David, Jr., Steag State Power Inc. and Senator Mar Roxas,
who will also be the keynote speaker during the week’s closing
ceremonies on Saturday, May 31st.
This year’s theme was inspired by Pope Benedict XVI’s message for the
42nd World Communications Day, which is also celebrated worldwide as
World Press Freedom Day on May 4, 2008, which had the theme “The
Media: At the Crossroads between Self-Promotion and Service. Searching
for the Truth in order to Share it with Others.”
Cagayan de Oro became the very first city to celebrate Press Freedom
Week in 1982 during the darkest days of martial law when Sen. Aquilino
Q. Pimentel, Jr., who hails from Cagayan de Oro, was still city mayor.
“Cagayan de Oro has a vibrant press that is kept alive by a vigorous
press club. The people of the city are proud of its lively press. We
are especially pleased that even during the dark days of martial law,
by Executive Order No. 241 we set aside a week to celebrate Press
Freedom in the city in 1982 and the Cagayan de Oro Press Club has
without let up held the celebration every year thereafter up to the
present,” Pimentel said. The senator is still an active member of the
COPC.
Other media organizations in the country also mark their own version
of Press Freedom Week, notably those in Cebu and Dumaguete. The Cebu
media will celebrate the 14th edition of Press Freedom week next
September with the Dumaguete Press Radio and Television Club
celebrating it on the same week.
