The local opposition is now asking for the status of the local school board fund amid the reported lack of text books, government teachers and classrooms in city public elementary and secondary schools for this school year 2008-2009.
Opposition City Councilor Roger Abaday even raised in a special report the provisions of the local government code that mandates a one percent share for the local school board fund for all the real property taxes that City Hall had collected in a given fiscal period.
But administration city councilors said budget allocations had already been made to address the lack classrooms in their Budget Ordinance 2008.
Also, that the Annual Investment Plan (AIP) for FY 2008 and the 20 percent development fund of Mayor Constantino Jaraula already includes the construction of a number of classrooms.
The administration city councilors are now asking Abaday to identify and submit a list of “priority schools” that needs more text books, teachers and classrooms.
Department of Education (DepEd) Schools Division Superintendent Dra. Myrna Motoomull told this paper that they do not have so much problem when it comes to teachers and text books.
She said the number of public school teachers is still adequate to give quality education and that text book needs are being supplied by the DepEd-national office.
However, Motoomull said what they need most are classrooms as they are now forced into implementing a double shifting and the cutting down of the number of classroom hours just to accommodate all enrollees.
The following public elementary schools need additional classrooms: Man-Ai Elementary School needs one additional classroom, Upper Tignapolo-an Elementary School needs one additional classroom, Dansolihon Elementary School needs one additional classroom, Tumpagon Elementary School needs one additional classroom, Dunggoan Elementary School needs two additional classroom and Macanhan Elementary School needs eight additional classrooms.
City Central Elementary School needs one additional classroom, Puerto Elementary School needs one additional classroom and St. John Elementary School needs one additional classroom.
For the secondary levels, Deped-Cagayan de Oro reported that the following needs classrooms: Bulua National High School needs one additional classroom, Iponan National High School needs two additional classrooms, Carmen National High School needs 13 additional classrooms.
Besigan High School needs two additional classroom, Cagayan de Oro NHS-Balulang Annex needs 10 additional classrooms, Tumpagon High School needs four additional classrooms, Iponan NHS-San Simon Annex needs additional three classrooms, Balubal High School needs one additional classroom, Indahag High School needs one additional classroom, Lapsan High School needs seven additional classroom, and Macabalan High School needs five additional classrooms.
