Sardines, noodles, milk prices soar in Northern Mindanao

Aside from the increase in the prices of rice, monitoring group from the regional office of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI-10) had observed the spike in the local prices of some sardines, noodles and milk here in Northern Mindanao as compared to last month.

Their records furnished to Gold Star Daily yesterday reveal their price analysis on prevailing prices of the basic necessities and Prime Commodities in the supermarkets/groceries and wet markets here in Cagayan de Oro. The comparative analysis was made between the prices a month ago and that of the second week of June 2008.

The supermarkets/groceries monitored include Robinson, Plaza Fair, Gaisano-Cogon, Ororama-Cogon, La Victoria, Kevin, Palaña, Fortune Enterprises, Golden Ace, Ororama-Carmen, Carmen Marketing, Leman’s General Marketing, KSY Convenience Store and SM City.

The wet markets monitored were Cogon Public Market and Carmen Public Market.

The DTI-10 monitoring group reported that Family Sardines “greatly increased by 8.6 percent in wetmarkets while it showed a 1% increase in groceries” while “Maggi noodles significantly increased by 7.2 percent in groceries.”

Other canned goods such as Purefoods corned beef (150g) was reported by the group to have increased by 4.9 percent in wetmarkets as well as Winner beef loaf (170g) which increased by two percent in wetmarkets also.

Alaska evaporated milk increased by 1.9 percent in Groceries while found to be stable in wetmarkets, Alaska powdered milk increased by one percent while Nido decreased by 0.9 percent in wetmarkets and that Blend 45 and Great Taste coffee meanwhile increased by 1.5 percent also in wetmarkets.
DTI-10 reported that the Surf bar increased by 2.5% in groceries while the Perla soap bar “significantly decreased” by 8.6 percent in wetmarkets while it showed a 2.9 percent increase in Groceries.

Also, Datu Puti vinegar increased by one percent while Silver Swan decreased by one percent in Groceries; Datu Puti Patis decreased by 2.8 percent in wetmarkets; Silver Swan Soy Sauce decreased by 1.9% in wetmarkets but showed an 4.2 percent increase in Groceries.
In hardwares, DTI observed the increase of Holcim cement by 3.3%.
“Prices of other commodities remained stable,” said
DTI-10 regional director Alicia V. Euseña who earlier already issued Memorandum Order No. 02-2008.

She said the order was to “authorize and/or deputize DTI-Region 10 employees as her duly authorized representatives and/or agents to enforce the Fair Trade Laws as enumerated under Ministry Order No. 69 Series of 1983 and other Fair Trade Laws implemented by the Department of Trade and Industry within the city of Cagayan de Oro.”

She added that the regional memorandum order served as the employees’ authority to conduct such enforcement and was presented to the owner/representative of the establishments monitored that day,” her memorandum reads.

Euseña herself also continues to conduct price monitoring for all “basic necessities and prime commodities.
