CDO dads grants mining permits to two firms amid environmental concerns

Two more small scale mining permits were recently granted by the City Council of Cagayan de Oro despite their effects to the environment.

During their recent city council session, City Councilor Caesar Ian Acenas moved for the approval of Proposed Resolution Nos. 2008-200 and 2008-201 that both were “favorably endorsing with Social Acceptability” the mining firms King Fisher Mineral Mining, Inc. and Mucho Dinero Mineral Mining, Inc.

The two resolutions also interposed no objections for the two mining firms to be granted the coveted “Small Scale Mining Permits” and operate at Sitio Balungkot, Barangay Dansolihon this city.

Small-scale mining or quarrying are those that cover less than five hectares and rely mainly on manual labor instead of heavy equipment.

Acenas said the operations of the two mining are “subject to the rules and regulations provided for under the City Codified Ordinance and of other local and national agencies covering such operations.”

The two resolutions were approved without any opposition from any colleague at the City Council but earlier Cagayan de Oro City Mayor Constantino G. Jaraula decided to put on hold all the application for mining permit renewals.

A city information office press release said Jaraula wanted “to avoid the total exploitation of the remaining resources of the city and to monitor the mining activities within the city.”

He said City Hall needs time to reconsider and reassess the social and environmentl impact of the local mining operations.

“I don’t want to happen in Cagayan de Oro what happened in Agusan del Norte. We have to do this, to protect our community and our resources,” City Hall information office quoted him as saying.

It added that the city mayor would only “allow the resumption of mining operations and issuances of permits to small-scale mining companies after seeing to it that they shall have complied with the requirements especially the environmental aspects which were accordingly neglected by most of the small-scale miners.”
