Cagayan de Oro to Host the 3rd Mindanao Island Fair in August 2008
July 12, 2008

Cagayan de Oro City - The Department of Trade and Industry – Regional Office No. 10 (DTI-10) will be staging the 3rd Mindanao Island Fair dubbed as the Kahimunan Mindanao 2008 on August 22-25, 2008 at the Limketkai Atrium, Cagayan de Oro City. This is in partnership with the Promote CDO Foundation, Inc. (Promote CDO), Advocate of Philippine Fair Trade Inc. (APFTI) and the Philippine Exporters Confederation, Inc.-10A (Philexport-10A). It can be recalled that General Santos City was the host of the same Island Fair for two (2) consecutive years.
Flash back: The 1st Mindanao Island Fair
The 1st Mindanao Island Fair was launched on July 15-17, 2006 in General Santos CIty. The fair was then named as the Yamang Mindanao Trade Exhibit (Yaman), named after the annual event of the Tuna city: the Yamang GenSan. The major aim of the trade exhibit was to primarily showcase the potentials of Mindanao’s Micro, Small and Medium Entrepreneurs (MSMEs) to be globally competitive. It featured an array of products from the six regions
of Mindanao: Regions 9, 10, 11, 12, Caraga and the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM), which caught the attention of both domestic and international buyers. But unlike any other Mindanao-wide trade fair/exhibit, the Yaman gives priority to the crafts and food products of the One Town One Product Program (OTOP) of the municipalities all over Mindanao and those assisted by the APFTI, being
one of the major sponsors of the event.
The Success of Yaman
Because of Yaman’s success in 2006, raking more than P30 million sales, the city of General Santos once again hosted the 2nd Mindanao Island Fair on June 29-July 2, 2007, dubbed as the Yamang Mindanao OTOP Island Fair. OTOP was given heavier emphasis this time considering the growing number of towns adopting the OTOP as a business development strategy. The 2nd Yaman proved to be another success with P28 million sales. Because of these two consecutive successes, then Trade Undersecretary Carissa Cruz-Evangelista convincingly announced that the Yaman “is being institutionalized as one of the biggest trade fairs in the country with the huge number of inquiries from entrepreneurs asking how to be part of the fair.”
Passing the Torch to Other Regions
During the DTI-Regional Operations Group Management Committee Meeting (DTI-ROG Mancom) at the 2nd Yaman in General Santos City, it was agreed that the other Mindanao regions will be given the chance/ privilege to organize and host the Mindanao Island Fair. For 2008, Cagayan de Oro City was named as the next host of said fair. However, to prevent confusion with the Yamang GenSan, which is an annual event in General Santos City, the 2008 host region, Northern Mindanao thru the DTI-10 decided to change the name of the Mindanao Island Fair to Kahimunan Mindanao (Creations of Mindanao).
From Yaman to Kahimunan
The Kahimunan Mindanao is a four-day showcase of innovative products in Mindanao combining homegrown materials and Filipino ingenuity, from Arts and Crafts, Fashion Accessories, Food, Furniture, Gifts, Toys and Houseware, and Organic and Natural Products from the six bountiful regions of Mindanao. More than 100 octanorm booths (2m x 3m) are open to the MSMEs and OTOPs to exhibit, promote and sell their products. Additional booths (Trellis-type) will be set up inside the Atrium and at the Rotunda to add spice and glamour to the fair.
The trellises at the Atrium will serve as special setting of the six regions, while those at the Rotunda will feature the products of the main exhibitors of the Northern Mindanao Region, in time of the Kagay-an Festival which is slated on August 22-28, 2008.
Let us all support and patronize the Creations of Mindanao, the Kahimunan Mindanao.
