City Councilor Alden Bacal issues a public apology to the city constituents and to the family of 15-year old Junrie Balingit who was killed by the vehicle the city councilor drove at Upper Dagong, Carmen this city last July 10, 2008.

He then appealed to the people to understand that what happened was an accident that has nothing to do with the City Government of Cagayan de Oro.

“My public apology to the people of Cagayan de Oro and I hope masabtan ninyo wala koy lain tuyo, that was a personal act ug walay labot ang Dakbayan sa Cagayan d Oro kay again that was a personal act. It was my personal. Again I would like to apologize to the people of Cagayan de Oro and most especially to the family,” he said.

Bacal made the apology during the City Council’s regular session yesterday as what was dubbed a “personal special privilege speech” that lasted for barely four minutes. It was moved by presiding officer City Councilor Ramon Tabor to be made part of the City Council’s records.

But Bacal’s apology, however, came with a request not to disturb the Balingit Family and his particularly regarding the incident.

“Nanghinaot sab ako nga dili na mahilabtan ang pamilya ug kini sa amoa pud nga side tungod kay na settle naman ang problema. Atubangon nato ang angay atubangon (I am hoping that no one will disturb the family and my side as everything has been settled. We will face whatever there is to be faced),” he said.

Bacal explained why he did not immediately face the media to clear his side about the issue on the accident.

He said this was to refrain from saying anything that might possibly hurt the Balingit family.

“Bisan ang pamilya, nagkaistorya man kami, dili sab sila gusto nga masakitan sab ako. (And even the family Balingit, when we talked, they told me that they do not want me to be hurt as well),” he said.

He added that there was an agreement reached between him and the Balingit family to keep mum on the whole incident.

Bacal then gave an assurance that there are now many aspects in his life that has changed and that many will be changed in the coming future.

He ended his speech by saying that he will not resign just because of the incident that killed a teenager.

“This representation is again and again, as what I have stated, magpadayon sa paglingkod sa katawhan sa Dakbayan sa Cagayan de Oro alangan sa ikaayo sa katawhan (I will continue to serve the people of Cagayan de Oro for the welfare of the people),” he said.

Earlier, there were calls from some sectors that Bacal should resign while lawyers said Bacal could lose his job if an administrative case is filed and won against the city councilor.
