Some peace advocates voice support for GRP-MILF MOA-AD

Various Mindanao peace advocate groups recently expressed their full support to the Bangsamoro’s quest to right to self-determination and appealed to the national government to put an end to the decade old problem of rebellion in Mindanao.”

Peace groups said the right to self-determination is a fundamental right recognized under international laws and this is manifested in the Memorandum of Agreement on Ancestral Domain (MOA-AD) entered into by the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) and the government.

They are now appealing to the Supreme Court which stayed the implementation of the MOA-AD not to allow itself to be a “stumbling block in resolving a political conflict that requires a political solution.”

And since the MOA-AD requires changing the 1987 Constitution, these peace advocates admitted that there might be some organizations in Manila that are going to use the MOA-AD to initiate Charter Change and promote their interests.

“Let it be clear, however, that based on the timeframe of the MOA-AD, this will only proceed not earlier than 2010 and therefore could not anymore be used to promote whatever political interest that there may be, rightly or wrongly,” they said in a statement e-mailed to Gold Star Daily.

The peace groups who signed this statement include: Immaculate Conception Parish, Mindanao Peoples Caucus, Peace Advocates Zamboanga/Katilingban, Mindanao Solidarity Network, Consortium of Bangsamoro Civil Society, Initiatives for International Dialogue, Peacebuilders Community, Bangsamoro Women Solidarity Forum and Generation Peace (GenPeace).

Also, Flor Santos of Sanlakas, Ian Rivera of Kalayaan, Waging Peace Philippines, Sr. Arnold Maria Noel, Bangsamoro Youth Leaders Forum, Bangsamoro Youth Assembly, Tulung Lupah Sug, IQRAA, Mindanao Migrant Center for Empowering Actions, Inc., Interreligious Solidarity Movement for Peace, Afrim, Center for Just Peace in the Philippines and United Youth for Peace and Development.
