Cagayan de Oro lawmakers are now calling for a full blown investigation on the spread of a contagious viral disease called hog cholera that is affecting hogs in 50 of the 80 barangays in the city.

Also, on the absence of information dissemination on the spread of the virus and how the City Veterinary Office had ran out of anti-hog cholera vaccines since September or over a month already without them knowing any better about it.

“Ako silang ipatawag sa ako committee or ipasulat regarding aning hog cholera (I will ask our City Veterinary Office people to either appear in my committee or even to explain in writing about this hog cholera),” City Councilor Dante Pajo, the chairperson for the committee on health and sanitation told Gold Star Daily yesterday.

He added that he would have move to call these City Veterinary officials to answer before the City Council plenary but they now have a full marathon budget hearing starting this Monday.

Pajo said a full information drive about hog cholera could have been coordinated by his committee to warn city residents about this virus and have their animals vaccinated.

Also, he said the City Government could have been immediately purchased more anti-hog cholera vaccines and that meat inspectors and market buyers forewarned to be extra-careful when purchasing pork meat.

Pajo said he constantly monitors all the other vaccines at the City Veterinary Office like that of the anti-rabbies vaccines but was only informed about this matter only to find out that the supply for the vaccines to prevent hog cholera has already ran out since last September.

He said he has received reports that those hog owners who want their animals vaccinated are told to buy their own vaccine and return to the City Veterinary Office to have the vaccine injected on their animals before it gets infected by the virus.

“Arresting the spread of this contagious virus is our concern,” he told Gold Star Daily.

Majority Floor Leader City Councilor Ramon Tabor as well as opposition city councilors Teodulfo Lao, Roger Abaday echoed out Pajo’s sentiments.

Tabor said the solution to this problem is to immediately purchase these anti-hog cholera vaccines and the City Council is ready to pass a legislative measure to appropriate funds if only there is a proper request from the City Veterinary Office.

“Kung wala magrequest purchase ang city veterinary its her blunder. Kung nag request wala actioni its the approving authority to blame,” he said.

Lao for his part said City Mayor Constantino Jaraula through officer-in-charge Vicente Emano can write to the City Council a proposed ordinance to have the affected areas declared under state of calamity and use the calamity fund for the immediate purchase of these anti-cholera vaccines.

“He wont let the spread of this epdemia become worst to both animals and human beings,” he said.

Abaday for his part said the whole thing is a “matter of planning” on behalf of the concerned department and that barangay officials must be the “first element to look into this epidemic.”
