Cagayan de Oro lawmakers yesterday passed an ordinance to appropriate a budget for the purchase of vaccines to counter the spread of the hog cholera virus that has already killed hundreds of hogs in the city.
The legislative measure came as a response to the special report rendered by trade and industry committee head City Councilor Ramon Tabor informed his colleagues that a number of hog raisers have been affected by this virus and that the City Veterinary Office had ran out of vaccines.
He said the ordinance would at least give legal basis for the immediate release of the funds to purchase the vaccines and arrest the spread of this virus even if the amount will have to be determined first by the City Veterinary Office.
“We will leave the amount blank para dili magbalik-balik,” he said during their session yesterday.
But Gusa Barangay chairperson Enrico Salcedo voiced convictions that the City Government is already “insolvent” and could no longer provide for enough funds to purchase the necessary vaccines to address the spread of this contagious virus.
He pointed out that the City Government needs cold cash to pay the electricity bills it owes to Moresco and to its debts.
“Aside nga walay kwarta dili nila priority kana (Aside from how there is no funds left it is not their priority),” he told Gold Star Daily.
City Councilor Dante Pajo, chairperson of the City Council’s committee on health, explained that the City Veterinary Office under Dr. Perla de Asis was able to give out and inject anti-hog cholera vaccines for free to some 1,380 hogs in the different barangays here in the city.
However, he said the supply of such vaccines ran out last month and the City Veterinary Office has immediately submitted a request to purchase more but such was put on hold as there was no longer budget for it in the fourth quarter.
Still, he added that he has ordered Dr. Asis to submit to him a written explanation regarding the details of this epidemic.
“For now we are warning the public not to eat pork being sold from tabi-tabi,” he said.
