Sniper teams from the elite Scout Rangers were deployed as the military offensive continued to build up pressure in the vicinity of Sultan Kudarat and the outlying border areas in what was dubbed as a major manhunt operations to get Abu Sayyaf chief Khadafy Janjalani.

Military sharpshooters were deployed following information support from the local residents themselves who were vocal in condemning terrorism and who wanted their communities to be free from the presence of terrorists and criminals.

A barangay leader in Barangay Butril which was affected by the operations said the residents were already fed up with the presence of armed groups in the area as he cited armed men from the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) roaming the mountains of Palembang. The area figured prominently last year in the kidnapping of a Korean and a businessman from Gen. Santos City by MILF’s Commander Tigre.

Brig. General Alexander Yano, 601^st brigade commander who leads the ground operations said that local civilians and even government officials in Palembang, a coastal town where the operations are on-going have provided support and valuable information on the specific whereabouts of the Janjalani group. It may be recalled that several boats bearing Janjalani and his armed group of about 70 were reported as having landed in Palembang sometime early July last month. It was reported that Janjalani escaped from the AFP’s tightening noose in Sulu and landed at the coastal area where Islamic militants were also operating.

Mayor Samrod Mamansual of Palembang generated local support to the ASG manhunt with the deployment of spotters and local guides to assist the military. The operations have constricted the areas where a network of underground caves were found. It was believed that Janjalani and his men were given sanctuary by Islamic militants and terrorists in the area.

Mamansual also led in mobilizing resources in the massive relief operations following the evacuation of affected residents in some outlying barangays. The department of social welfare and development (DSWD) and the government-ran multi donor program of the United Nations agencies (GOP-MDP) distributed relief goods and assistance.

President Arroyo recently ordered the Army engineering brigade to fasttrack the completion of the road system that would connect Palembang to Kalamansig through the coastal rim and provide the so-called “missing link” to complete the road loop connecting Gen. Santos City and Cotabato city through the coastal route of Sultan Kudarat province. The road opening would open up development of those long-isolated coastal sites and deter the presence of armed groups.
