The regional office of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI-10) is now investigating police officers who are accused of salvaging a quack doctor 30-year old Robert “Benjun” Abadias Martinez.

This as NBI-10 acting regional director Atty. Jose Justo Yap yesterday faced the victim’s father 75-year old Frederico Martinez, the victim’s brother Roberto “Dodong” Martinez and the witnesses.

He told them that he will be assigning an agent to take care of taking down the testimonies of the witnesses and for the documentation of the case.

“As soon as we have properly identified the suspects and have enough evidence against them, then we will immediately file the appropriate charges. There is a process we have to follow and we do not want to file charges that would only be dismissed later on,” he said.

NBI-10 Dr. Tammy Uy had already conducted an autopsy on the victim which showed gunshot wounds at the back of the victim’s head, at the victim’s left knee and at the victim’s back spinal cord.

Autopsy photos also showed several wounds on the victim’s left face, right cheek and back area among others. Dr. Kester Maniaul who signed the victim’s death certificate said the young Martinez died due to “multiple gunshot wounds.”

The victim is a resident of Isla de Oro, Barangay 13 this city is set to be buried today at the Bolonsori City Memorial Cemetery .

In an interview with Gold Star Daily, the victim’s family members and some witnesses are convinced that police officers particularly members of the Cagayan de Oro Anti-Illegal Drug TaskForce (CAID-TF) are involved in the victim’s murder.

They said this is precisely the reason why they are seeking help from the NBI-10 and not from the Philippine National Police (PNP-10) or at the Cagayan de Oro City Police Office (Cocpo).

Also, they added that Cocpo director Isagani Genabe, Jr. had already released statements saying that he has seen “no irregularity” in his police officers.

They narrated how the victim was at the Inilog Grill at Tiano-Kalambaguhan Street last Thursday night when one of the police officers allegedly slapped him for unknown reason.

When the police officers were coming out of the restaurant, they said Martinez used a rock to hit CAID-TF member PO1 Wilson Estenzo, Jr. on his right eye and thus, incurring the wrath of the entire group of police officers.

They said a hot pursuit ensued with the victim running towards the Cosmopolitan Funeral Homes at Capistrano-Kalambaguhan Streets.

They recounted how the police officers run after the victim and shooting at the latter with seven of the bullets hitting their establishment’s building instead

They said he and those people who were conducting a vigil went out of their funeral home and were almost caught in the crossfire.

They added that the men who were running after Martinez to be wearing police uniforms and caught up with the victim when they reached the basement level of their funeral home.

They said those who were around saw the police officers caught up with Martinez , kicked and shot the victim several times.

They added that the victim was then loaded to a red-colored jeepey vehicle and the police officers took off heading towards the direction of the Divisoria Park area.

The witnesses accompanied the victim’s father to the NBI-10 yesterday morning to give his sworn statement for the formal filing of a murder case against the suspected police officers.

They submitted a photocopy of his log book which detailed the shooting incident.

The witnesses admitted that he fears for his life considering that some people are already conducting what he calls “surveillance” around his residence but vowed that nothing will deter him from testifying on what had happened.

Also, Dodong Martinez showed Yap documents pointing to the alleged involvement of police officers including a list of names of the CAID-TF members and a copy of a Northern Mindanao Medical Center (NMMC) log book which contained details of how police officer Estenzo sought medical help around 11:00 that evening for an injured right eye.

The log book showed how Estenzo was brought in by police officers who refused to give their names to the security guard.

The Martinez sibling also showed Yap the photos of how his brother was brutally murdered.

“Gibinaboy gyud nila ug patay akong igsoon sir,” he said.
