A rollback on fares for public utility jeepneys (PUJs), buses and taxicabs are to be implemented in the entire region starting this Monday, the regional office of the Land Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB-10) announced yesterday.
LTFRB-10 regional director Mandangan Darimbang said that the PUJ minimum fare will be reduced by P0.50 making it only P6.50 per passenger.
Also, he said there will be a reduction on the charges for each succeeding kilometer by at least P0.10 per kilometer.
Darimbang yesterday met with the local transportation group to inform them of this latest development and to insure its full implementation starting this Monday.
He said they are now preparing new fare matrices to properly guide the PUJ operators, drivers and the riding public which will be available starting Monday and should be properly posted in their vehicles.
“But even if they do not have a copy of the new fare matrix, they are required by law to follow the new rolled back fare rates,” he told Gold Star Daily.
The new PUJ fare rates are based on a five-page order signed by LTFRB chairperson Thompson Lantion that also outlined the reduction in oil prices in the world market and the roll back in pump prices at the local gasoline stations.
The order also mandates that minimum fares for ordinary buses will remain at P8.50 for the first 5 kilometers but reduction of P0.05 per succeeding kilometer while regular air-conditioned buses will implement a P1.55 per kilometer reduction.
Also, taxicab drivers are also ordered to removed the P10.00 additional flag down fee stickers provisionally granted to them when the prices of diesel skyrocketed to more than P60.00 per liter.
Meanwhile, Darimbang vowed that, by the end of this month, their office and the regional office of the Land Transportation Office (LTO-10) will be conducting an operation to apprehend PUJ drivers who still do not have a copy of the new reduced fare matrix.
He said those PUJ drivers caught without the new fare matrix will be fined P1,000 for the first offense, P2,000 for the second offense and the cancellation of their license on the third offense.
“We are also appealing to the riding public to immediately report to our office any driver who insist on collecting fares based on the old rates,” he said.
He added that all PUJs are also called upon to grant the 20 percent discount for senior citizens and students.
