Eye witnesses, family members and even barangay officers who are accusing police officers of killing 30-year old Robert “Benjan” Martinez are claiming that they are now receiving threats from some unidentified men.

Already, Regional State Prosecutor Fiscal Jaime Umpa said they are ready to take these witnesses under the Witness Protection Program (WPP) as soon as the necessary documents and requirements are submitted to their office.

National Bureau of Investigation (NBI-10) regional director Atty. Jose Justo Yap said their agency has recommendatory powers on who shall be placed under the Department of Justice’s WPP but that they will still have to check the statements of these witnesses.

“Because if we cannot use their statements in the actual case, we cannot recommend that they will be placed under the WPP,” he told Gold Star Daily.

The security guard who saw the shootout incident at the Cosmopolitan Funeral Homes and recorded it on his log book said he and his wife are being placed under what he described as “surveillance” by some men.

He said these men have been unusually hanging around their neighborhood area for sometime since the shooting incident and had been inquiring about his wheareabouts and what he actually looks like.

Because of this the security guard who has accompanied the Martinez family to the NBI-10 office to give his sworn statement said he believes this is related to the above murder case involving some members of the Cagayan de Oro Anti-Illegal Drug Task Force (CAID-TF).

He said he has now opted to be always on a lookout and has been trying to change his appearance or put on some covering to his face.

“Ingon lagi nila sa akoa nga dili lang gyud mokumpyansa (They have already advised me not to take any chances),” he said.

The victim’s brother Dodong Martinez also disclosed that there have been some men who were observed by him, his father 75-year old Frederico Martinez and their neighbors as hanging around Isla de Oro.

He said their neighborhood is small and people know each other but these suspicious-looking men are new and that he felt threatened around them.

Dodong said he and his father are now taking precautions against these men. Still, he vowed that he will not be deterred from seeking justice for his brother’s death.

Even dxIF Bombo Radyo broadcaster Joel Jacobo who has been conducting an investigative report on this murder case yesterday revealed how two unidentified men had been asking around where he is and even how he looks like.

He voiced convictions that the presence of these men is related to the Martinez murder case as he feels that they wanted to silenced him.

Over radio interviews, Barangay 14 chairperson Ester Cebe said she too has received threats since she has promised to help in seeking justice for Martinez ’s death.

She said men in motorcycles have been asking for her whereabouts and her appearance as well.

“Pero dili kami mahadlok. Magpadayon hinoon kami ug tabang kanila,” she said.
