Authorities are now hunting down the members of the National People’s Army (NPA) who staged three separate attacks and carted away nine firearms and razed another Globe Cell tower and burned down a mining company’s expensive heavy equipment in the Caraga region last Monday.

The Army’s Fourth Infantry Division spokesperson Major. Michelle Anayron said these series of attacks are part of the upcoming anniversary of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) in coordination with its armed-wing, the NPA, this December 26, 2008.

“It happened and we are now pursuing them with the help of our police and local communities,” he told Gold Star Daily.

Anayron said this even as he announced that there will be a Christmas ceasefire or a suspension of military operations (SOMO) this December 24 and 25 and then on December 31, 2008 and January 1, 2009.

He said this would be a big break not just insurgents but for the soldiers and the local communities.

Still, he added that they will be keeping enough force on the ground for any untoward incident.

Earlier, Philippine National Police (PNP-Caraga) operations and planning division chief Senior Supt. Nestor Fajura-ang reported that the NPA specifically the Front Committee 16-A staged three series of attacks around 2:15 a.m. Monday.

He said the group disguised themselves as members of the Regional Mobile Group and even introduced themselves as such to catch their victims off guard.

Fajura-ang said the group attacked the Tubay Municipal Police Station and then burned a Globe Telecommunications, Inc. cellsite.

He said the communist insurgents were then able to cart away nine long firearms from the security guards at SRMI Mining Company at Tubay, Agusan del Norte by disguising and then introducing themselves as members of the Regional Mobile Group.

He added that the communist groups then burned expensive equipments of the mining company including a backhoe.
