Flood death toll climbs, over 150,000 persons affected in second

FIVE people died, around 13 others are reported missing and almost 150,000 people were affected in Northern Mindanao due to four simultaneous incidences that hit the region –flashfloods, landslides, big waves and strong winds, authorities reported yesterday.

“This is worse than last week,” Office of Civil Defense (OCD-10) regional director Carmelito Lupo told Gold Star Daily adding that they are still bracing themselves for the numbers to climb as they are still gathering more reports from the affected areas.

OCD-10 records already show that the 119 barangays affected areas from Cagayan de Oro City, Iligan City , Gingoog City and Oroquieta City as well as from the provinces of Misamis Oriental, Lanao del Norte and Misamis Occidental.

Already, 70 evacuation centers catering to 9,729 families or 46,114 individuals have been opened up in these affected areas.

OCD-10 records shows there were nine landslides in barangays Taglimao, Tuburan, Baikingon, Pigsag-an, Tumpagon, San Simon, Iponan and Pagatpat all of Cagayan de Oro City and another landslide at Barangay Dalipuga in Iligan City.

Those who died due to the landslides are: 42- year old Dario Ompok from Purok 5 Upper Barangay Dalipuga of Iligan City , 18-year old Micheal Arangco from Barangay Pagatpat, Cagayan de Oro City and Micheal Señoron from Lumbia, Cagayan de Oro City.

Those who died by drowning were six-year old Crisante Ampo from Barangay Samay, Gingoog City and 14-year old Dancel Namata from Pangpangon, Talisayan, Misamis Oriental.

Among those reported missing are 23-year old Danilo Galario from Barangay Libon, Gingoog City and16-year old Jun Harvey Abao of Pangpangon Talisayan, Misamis Oriental and three-year old Eizel Ragmak of Purok 6, Mapulong, Naawan, Misamis Oriental.

The Cagayan de Oro City Disaster Coordinating Council-Cagayan de Oro City officer Emil Rana reported that 72,673 people are already affected in 40 of the 80 barangays of the city.

Misamis Oriental Provincial Disaster Coordinating Council Teddy Sabuga-a said 73,971 individuals in 18 municipalities were also affected in their province.

Also, initial records of yesterday 3:00 p.m. already reveal over 1,027 houses were affected with 272 of them totally destroyed in Cagayan de Oro City and in the Misamis Oriental alone.

The Cagayan de Oro barangays that were hit include Barangay 13, Barangay 17, Barangay 18, Barangay 21, Barangay 22, Barangay 24, Barangay 26, Barangay 27, Barangay 30, Barangay 31, Barangay 35 and Barangay 36.

Also affected were barangays Agusan, Baikingon, Balulang, Bayabas, Bugo, Bulua, Camaman-an, Canitoan, Carmen, Consolacion, Gusa, Iponan, Lapasan, Macasandig, Macabalan, Pagatpat, Patag, Pigsag-an, Puntod, San Simon, Taglimao, Tuburan, Tumpagon.

In Gingoog City , Misamis Oriental, the barangays affected include Barangay 13, Barangay 18, Barangay 19, Barangay 20, Barangay 24, Barangay 25, Barangay 26, Santiago , Agay-ayan, San Luis, Daan Lungsod, Malinao and Tagapako.

In Oroquieta City , Misamis Occidental, Lupo said the barangays affected include Barangay Talic, Barangay San Vicente Alto, Barangay Upper Langcagan and Barangay San Vicente Bajo.

Only Barangay Dalipuga was reported to have been hit in Iligan City .

Lupo said 13 towns in Misamis Oriental were also hit as well as the Municipality of Linamon , Lanao del Norte.
