Around 50 heavily-armed members of the New People’s Army (NPA) yesterday attacked the police municipal station at Carmen, Agusan del Norte and killed a top-ranking police officer and carted away an undetermined number of firearms, authorities reported yesterday.
The police officers manning the Carmen municipal police station were outnumbered and SPO4 Ambrosio Aboc was gunned down on the spot.
Fourth Infantry Division spokesperson Major Michelle Anayron told Gold Star Daily that their men are now coordinating with the local police in conducting pursuit operations against these rebels.
“Part of their plan to project their presence in the area,” he said.
The Philippine National Police-Caraga Regional Mobile Group and the 14th Police Provincial Mobile Group are now conducting an investigation on the incident and had stepped up the alert level in the area.
PO2 Jay Rebuene, the police officer from the neighboring Nasipit Municipal Police Station who responded to the scene, said the rebels used the cover of darkness and attacked the Carmen municipal police station at around 1:00 a.m. yesterday.
He said the rebels immediately left after killing Aboc and carting away some firearms that were stored at the Carmen municipal police station.
“Wala pa namo mahibalo-i kung pila ka mga tag-as nga de kalibre ang ilang nadala ug unsa kini nga mga klase (We still do not know how many long firearms they took and what kind),” he said during an interview with Bombo Radyo yesterday morning.
Police Senior Insp. Robertitu Delopere, the station commander of the neighboring Nasipit municipal police station, later clarified that the rebels only took away short firearms.
Just last Wednesday 4:00 p.m., 40 armed NPA rebels also attacked the Malaybalay City Jail in Barangay Pagatpat, Malaybalay City , Bukidnon.
