1 election machine for CDO voters’ info drive

January 3, 2010

The Commission on Elections- Cagayan de Oro (Comelec-CDO) recently disclosed that there is only one election machine or Precinct Count Optical Scan (PCOS) being used for their voters’ information drives in all of the 80 barangays here in the city.Comelec-CDO election officer Atty. Gina Zayas-Sabio said there are some 7,000 PCOS machines to arrive here for the upcoming automated elections.

“Pero isa ra ang gigamit karon para sa atong voters’ information drive diri sa syudad (But we are using only one machine for our voters’ information drive here in the city),” she said.

As of November 30, 2009, there were already 287,025 registered voters in Cagayan de Oro city. Comelec-CDO has already started on their barangay voters’ education campaign on the automated election system (AES) but this was cut short by the Supreme Court decision to implement an extension on the schedule for new voters’ registration last December 2009.

Meanwhile, Sabio voiced strong convictions that they would still be able to conduct their barangay-to-barangay voters’ education drive without a hitch even with only one PCOS at hand.

She explained that they would be bringing with them not just the one PCOS when they visit the barangays but also a “wide screen” for people to watch while their AES experts demonstrate on how to vote using these election machines.

“Palinyahon ang mga tawo para sa kadtong gusto makakita sa kining PCOS (Voters would be requested to queue or line-up particularly those who would want to see what the PCOS looks like),” she said.

Sabio said they would be bringing with them sample ballots that would be used for these PCOS machines and would be explaining on how the proper way of casting votes.

“Among ipakita step-by-step sa mga botante unsaon pag-shade sa balota hangtud sa pagpakaon niini didto sa makina ug unya sa resulta (We would be demonstrating to the voters step-by-step on how they should shade their ballots even up to the feeding of these ballots to the PCOS machines and the yielding out of the result),” she said.

Sabio said voters would also be reminded during their information drives that they must come to the polling precinct with minds already decided on whom to vote for among the candidates.

She said this as voters would no longer be given another ballot to cast their votes should they commit a mistake in casting their votes.

“Kaisa lang pwede mag-shade sa balota matag kandidatong pili-on, bantayanan gyud sa matag botante nga dili sila masayop (Voters would only be shading their ballots once for each desired candidate, so they should make sure that they would not commit any mistake),” she said.

Because of this, Sabio said the Comelec has allowed voters to bring with them their own list of candidates when they cast their votes in their respective polling precincts.

She added that the bringing of some papers when casting votes was disallowed during the manual elections held last 2007.
