January 20, 2010
Hundreds of Black Nazarene devotees including Nazareno Parish priest Msgr. Rey Monsanto extended their hands towards PaDayon Pilipino standard bearer Cagayan de Oro city vice-mayor Vicente Emano and his full slate of candidates in a pray-over held at the altar of the Nazareno Church here last Friday.Over 30 PaDayon Pilipino political lieutenants and barangay chairpersons from the two districts of the city attended the church gathering and also joined in extending their hands for the pray-over.
In an interview, Emano’s daughter and PaDayon Pilipino candidate for city councilor Atty. Nadia Emano said they were invited by Monsanto to attend an earlier scheduled Black Nazarene novena mass.
However, she said they were already committed elsewhere and that they requested that they be scheduled at a later novena mass.
“We are very thankful that they were still able to accommodate us,” the young Emano said. Atty. Nadia formerly served as among the staunched lawyers in the local Public Attorneys’ Office (PAO).
City Councilor President Elipe who is seeking for re-election in the coming elections said the Nazareno Church gathering and pray-over was warmly welcomed by the members of their PaDayon Pilipino political party.
Meanwhile, Monsanto said the pray-over was part of the parish-initiative voters’ education drive in being informed as to the local candidates for the upcoming elections.
He said it was also part of the move of the Archdiocese of Cagayan de Oro to pray for cleaner and non-violent national and local elections this May 10, 2010.
He added that they handed out invitations to all political candidates to attend the Black Nazarene novena masses and to be introduced to the churchgoers who attended these mass celebrations. The invitations were handed out to the local political parties as early as Jan. 2 this year.
Earlier, the Lakas-Kampi-Cagayan de Oro standard bearer First District of Cagayan de Oro Cong. Rolando “Klarex” Uy and his party candidates from the city’s two districts attended the second Nazareno novena mass Tuesday last week.
The Liberal Party-Cagayan de Oro with its mayoral candidate Atty. Berchman Abejuela and his party members attended the Thursday Black Nazarene novena mass.
