Named after the magicians of old, the Magis Football Club recently emerged as the champion of a three-leg football tournament spearheaded by the Cagayan de Oro City-Misamis Oriental Football Association (CMOFA).
Hillsiders Football Club came out as the First Runner-Up while the Monte Carlo Football Club slid in as a Second Runner-up. Xavier University Men’s Varsity Team, Leceo de Cagayan Men’s and Women’s Varsity teams, and the Sacred Heart Football Club were among the delegates who have participated the contest.
Rowell Valledor, public relations officer of CMOFA, said the tournament was dubbed as the “Zoilo Antonio Velez ‘Futsal’ Football Tournament” and was held in association to the Sabado Gang Football Club headed by its president, Mike Batiles.
He said the “Futsal” or also known as “football sala” tournament was held in three succeeding Saturdays.
The first leg having been held at the packed Lapasan Covered Court, last January 30, 2010, followed by its second leg at the fan-filled Bugo Reyes Covered Court, on February 6.
The games culminated last Feb. 14 at the Camaman-an Covered Court where the awarding of the winners was also conducted on the afternoon immediately after all the games are played.
During the games, Valledor said spectators were filled with excitement to also play and learn to play the game Futsal which is usually played in a smaller area such as a basketball court compared to the regular football.
“There was a motorcade held and even football talent exhibitions,” he said in the CMOFA statement furnished to this paper.
The awarding ceremony was attended by CMOFA president Atty. Zoilo Antonio Velez himself together with the Sabado Gang members and other CMOFA officials.
Velez, who is also the former president of the Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP-MisOr), described the tournament as “productive and healthy activities” for the young people.
“We are giving them avenues of worthy pursuits keeping them from being buried in lethargic youthful activities that beset our community nowadays,” he said.
